The Alaska Public Defender Agency is currently hiring trial attorneys for its Anchorage and Palmer offices. Trial attorneys for the Alaska Public Defender Agency provide court-appointed legal representation to indigent individuals in criminal cases. Applicants must possess outstanding writing and analytical skills and be able to work independently to research and compose legal briefs as well as possess strong oral advocacy skills and clinical/trial practicum experience. Applicants must be admitted to the Alaska bar, be willing to sit for the next Alaska bar exam, or be eligible for bar admission by reciprocity. Prior legal experience preferred. Job provides excellent state benefits. Salary range is commensurate with experience and dependent on location (COLA included): Anchorage & Palmer: $60,138.00 - $106,450.50 annually. Restoring Justice is hiring a small team of full-time Staff Attorneys to help drive our organization's services forward. Staff Attorneys are responsible for performing all duties associated with representing indigent individuals charged with state crimes, primarily felonies. Staff Attorneys handle all stages and aspects of a criminal case in district (trial-level) court, including pretrial litigation, plea negotiations, trial, and sentencing. Federal Defender Services of Idaho, Inc. (FDSI) is a nonprofit, Community Defender Organization for the District of Idaho with offices in Boise and Pocatello. In addition to our trial unit, we have a capital habeas unit in our Boise office. We are organized under 18 U.S.C. § 3006A(g)(2)(B) and represent indigent persons accused of criminal offenses in federal court as well as persons under death sentences mainly in Idaho but also other states. The present executive director has held this position for over twenty-five years. The new executive director should be a skilled and experienced criminal defense trial attorney capable of holding a leadership position in a public defense organization and passionate about representing the indigent accused. As such, the executive director must be able to work with various federal agencies, other defender organizations, and the Courts, and advocate for the interests of our organization and the larger criminal defense community. The executive director is expected to carry some caseload, fill in where needed, and appear frequently in federal court so as to inspire and provide an example to others.

5/21/2020 - International Fellow, International Legal Foundation - Remote

The International Legal Foundation (ILF) is seeking lawyers with extensive criminal defense experience and legal aid institutional know-how to join its Natalie Rea International Fellows program and provide training and capacity building to local lawyers and legal aid providers in developing and transitional legal systems through day-to-day, case-by-case mentoring. Juvenile justice experts are particularly needed to support the development of specialized units to provide quality representation to children in conflict with the law. We currently have fellow positions available with our teams in Afghanistan, Myanmar, Palestine (West Bank), and Tunisia. Fellows are normally embedded within ILF’s local offices, but due to the unfolding global health emergency, fellows will work remotely for the foreseeable future. An in-country fellow role may be possible, as the situation develops and if circumstances allow. The ILF’s International Fellows program provides criminal justice professionals with the opportunity to have a direct and positive impact on their fellow lawyers abroad and in the process contribute to the development of justice systems around the world. Fellow positions are volunteer/ pro bono positions, but a small monthly stipend will be provided based on a minimum weekly hour commitment and fellowship duration. Texas RioGrande Legal Aid, the nation’s largest civil legal services program, operates an innovative public defender program now in ten rural South Texas counties. The TRLA Rural Defender Service offers wrap-around, holistic legal services to its clients charged with criminal offenses. TRLA currently seeks felony-qualified lawyers to serve in the Coastal Bend area of South Texas, approximately 90 miles southeast of San Antonio. Currently, we have an office in Beeville, Texas that serves Bee, Live Oak, McMullen, Goliad, and Refugio counties. We may be opening another office in the area this year. TRLA represents persons charged with crimes from initial arrest to final appeal, except for cases where conflicts exist or the death penalty is being sought. TRLA’s public defender program organizes its case assignments vertically – the lawyer initially assigned to a case stays with the client for the duration unless extenuating circumstances arise. Additionally, TRLA is looking for a few attorneys that aspire to become managing attorneys in our public defender program. We encourage attorneys that would like to develop as leaders in the public defender community. We cover registration fees and expenses for participation in advanced leadership programs.
