Washington, DC (August 14, 2015) – Philadelphia, PA, attorney George Henry Newman was elected to the Board of Directors of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL) at the Association's 58th annual meeting in Denver, CO, on July 26. In addition to serving on the Board, Newman currently chairs the By-Laws Committee, and serves on the Indigent Defense, Audit, and Membership committees, continues to serve on the Champion Advisory Board, and is an active participant in Clemency Project 2014. Newman previously served as NACDL’s Parliamentarian from 2013-14 and has served as co-chair of the Long Range Planning Committee, as well as on and the Association's Budget Committee.
Newman has been a dedicated member of NACDL for more than three decades, previously serving on its Board of Directors from 1993-99 and again from 2010-13. He has also chaired NACDL's Death Penalty and Indigent Defense Committees, and helped establish and later chaired NACDL's Council of Affiliates. Newman helped found the Pennsylvania Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (PACDL), and served as the vice president of PACDL from 1988 to 1990. Newman also lectured at NACDL's 2013 Drug Seminar in Las Vegas.
Newman is currently a sole practitioner whose practice specializes in criminal defense in trial, appellate, habeas corpus, and asset forfeiture matters. He practices nationwide in the Federal Court system and throughout the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. He is admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania, the United States District Courts for the Eastern, Middle, & Western Districts of Pennsylvania, the Third Circuit Court of Appeals, and the Supreme Court of the United States. Earlier in his career, Newman was an Assistant Defender with the Defender Association of Philadelphia. He is certified as a criminal trial advocate by the National Board of Trial Advocacy.
Newman has lectured and written extensively on criminal defense, federal sentencing, forfeiture, legal ethics and legal research, and is listed in the Marquis Who's Who publication of Who's Who in American Law. Newman is also a member of the Philadelphia Bar Association. In 1987 and 2004, he served as Chairman of the Criminal Justice Section of the Philadelphia Bar and was the 2006 recipient of the Philadelphia Bar Association’s Justice Thurgood Marshall Award.
Newman received his bachelor's degree with honors from the University of Pennsylvania in 1971, and his law degree from Temple University Law School in 1975. He lives in Philadelphia with his wife, Linda, two sons, Josh and Dave, and dog, Woodie.
