Washington, DC (August 14, 2015) – After many years of service to the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL) and the criminal law field, Jean-Jacques "J" Cabou has been elected to NACDL's Board of Directors. He was elected at the Association's 58th annual meeting in Denver, CO, on July 26.
Cabou, a Phoenix-based partner in Perkins Coie LLP's Investigations and White Collar Defense Group, has dedicated much of his career to criminal law and continuing legal education. Cabou has served on the Association's Board of Directors since 2012, during which time he has served on the faculties of numerous NACDL conferences and seminars including the White Collar Defense College and the West Coast White Collar College. He previously served on the Board of Governors of NACDL's Arizona affiliate, the Arizona Attorneys for Criminal Justice (AACJ), from 2009-2011 and has contributed extensively to both the AACJ and NACDL’s amicus programs, authoring and reviewing numerous amicus briefs on behalf of both organizations. Previously, Cabou was counsel of record for NACDL in its amicus efforts before the U.S. Supreme Court in Elashi v. United Statesand before the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts in Bridgeman, et al. v. District Attorney.
Cabou has particular experience in white collar matters and is especially knowledgeable on both state and federal civil forfeiture and racketeering laws. He also represents individuals and entities in criminal post-conviction work, including direct appeals, extraordinary writs, and other post-conviction proceedings. Cabou has represented clients before the United States Supreme Court, United States Court of Appeals, United States District Court, as well as Arizona's trial, appellate and Supreme Courts.
Cabou has taught and lectured extensively on criminal law, serving as an Adjunct Professor at The University of Chicago Law School and at the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law at Arizona State University.
Cabou is a graduate of The University of Chicago Law School and the University of Virginia.
