Election Timelines

These timelines and deadlines apply to the current NACDL annual election.

This year, NACDL members will elect thirteen members of the Board of Directors, as well as President-Elect, First Vice President, Second Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary.

NACDL will observe the following deadlines for this annual election:

The Nomination Process

Pursuant to Article VIII, Section 1, “Any member qualified to vote may be nominated as a candidate for any Officer or Director position. A member may be nominated by one of three means:

  1. By the Nominating Committee, as set forth in Article VII, Section 5 (a);
  2. Any Member of the Association qualified to vote may nominate by petition any other Member qualified to hold office; or
  3. Any Member qualified to vote may nominate by petition himself or herself.”
Nominating Committee

Candidates for nomination by the Nominating Committee must submit materials via a form to be published at www.NACDL.org/elections. Candidates who submit materials via other channels cannot be guaranteed that their submissions will be transmitted to the Nominating Committee.

Candidates seeking nomination by the Nominating Committee should note the following deadlines:

February 23

The form to submit candidacy materials to the Nominating Committee will become available at www.NACDL.org/elections. The form will go live no earlier than 10:00 am Eastern Time on February 23.

April 1, 5:00pm Eastern Time  

Candidates seeking nomination by the Nominating Committee must submit the following via web form posted at www.NACDL.org/elections:
  1. A resume
  2. A statement of qualifications of up to 600 words
    1. The statement of qualifications should include a statement of service to NACDL.
    2. It may also include and may also include NACDL meetings attended, member recruitment efforts, and committee work and service to the legal profession (including work on behalf of criminal justice issues and for other professional associations), a description of the member’s practice (including areas of concentration and percentage of time devoted to criminal defense and pro bono work) and other relevant community service
  3. A photo
  4. A designation of the position(s) for which the member would like to be considered and why
  5. A statement that the member is a member in good standing his or her respective bar
  6. Disclosure of any indictment or information for any felony or crime involving moral turpitude
May 18
The Nominating Committee must notify the Executive Director of its nominations.
May 20
The NACDL membership will be notified of the Nominating Committee's list of candidates via www.nacdl.org/elections, and subsequently in other media.
Nomination by Petition

Candidates petitioning for nomination or members submitting petitions on behalf of another candidate should note the following deadlines:

June 16, 5:00pm Eastern Time
Petitions must be uploaded via form that will be made available at www.NACDL.org/elections. Petitions must be submitted along with the following:
  1. A statement of qualifications of no more than 600 words
  2. A photo
  3. A statement that the petitioner is a member in good standing with his or her respective bar.

The window to upload petitions will open no earlier than 10:00 am on May 23. Candidates are responsible for confirming that their materials have been received.

The Election

In the event that there is a contested election for any position, information on voting in the election will be posted on this website by July 1.

    The National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL) remains deeply concerned over recent executive orders targeting law firms, most recently Paul Weiss and Perkins Coie, and repeats its call to uphold the right to counsel and the independence of the legal profession. Despite a ruling blocking the action against Perkins Coie, the administration has continued to target law firms representing disfavored clients and positions, threatening the right to a zealous defense.
